Driving Toward Independence – José’s Momentum Story

Andrew Skinner noviembre 10, 2023 News, Noteworthy, SCI, Triumph Outreach Update

"It's mind-blowing. I wasn't expecting this at all."

Some of the most motivating people I know aren’t satisfied overcoming their own obstacles; they crush them on the way to helping others overcome their obstacles as well.

José is one of those obstacle-crushers, who I’m thrilled to call my friend.

From a young age, José grappled with severe scoliosis, enduring excruciating pain, bullying and a search for answers. At age 18, he underwent a lengthy surgery to address the issue, but a mistake left him paraplegic.

Recently, he faced another setback – he was hit by a car, which added to his physical and financial burdens.

Despite his challenges, José has found strength to pursue a positive impact by helping others with similar stories. He has become a pillar of support for his fellow wheelchair users, commuting tirelessly on busses and trains across Southern California to lead a support group as a Triumph Lead Ambassador at The Perfect Step and works selling water purifiers for Kangen Water .

José recently applied to be considered for an adapted vehicle, which would be a key factor in gaining more independence and his ability to get to his job and physical therapy.

Watch the video below to see where José's story goes next.

It's awe-inspiring to see how people like José turn adversity into power and resilience.

And the momentum keeps on going!

PS - This time of year can be especially hard on people suffering with spinal cord injuries and paralysis. Please consider helping Triumph do even more this holiday season. More details below.

"The momentum we’ve built serving the paralysis community doesn’t stop. It can’t. It pushes us to achieve new things each and every day, and motivate others to embark on their own journey of recovery and restoration."
