Moving Forward: Deserae’s Road to Recovery

Andrew Skinner June 10, 2026 News, Noteworthy, Triumph Outreach Update

Deserae's life changed in an instant while vacationing in Puerto Vallarta. After swinging from a cliff into the ocean, she fell short and landed on the rocks below, sustaining a severe spinal cord injury.

Deserae was diagnosed with paraplegia and cauda equina syndrome, including a burst fracture of her first lumbar vertebra. She underwent extensive surgery with spinal stabilization and decompression from T11 to L4.

As she began the long road to recovery, Deserae was connected to Triumph Foundation through Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital in Murrieta. Through our Wheelchair Loaner Program, we were able to provide support during this critical transition period and introduce her to resources available within the paralysis community.

In addition, we shared information about Triumph Foundation's grant programs, peer support, adaptive recreation opportunities, and ways to connect with others who understand the challenges of living with paralysis.

A spinal cord injury can feel overwhelming, but no one should have to navigate it alone. We're honored to be part of Deserae's journey and look forward to seeing her continue to gain strength, independence, and confidence as she moves forward.
