Empowering Shawna: How You Transformed Accessibility for Her
May 15, 2025 News, Noteworthy, SCITriumph Foundation’s mission is to empower individuals dealing with paralysis by providing the resources and support needed to live functional, fulfilling, and independent lives. Our Keep Moving Forward (KMF) Grant Program, is helping bridge the gap between need and accessibility.
A Story of Triumph: Shawna’s Journey
Shawna, a pediatric speech/language pathologist who uses a manual wheelchair full-time due to a degenerative condition, exemplifies the impact of YOUR support. Despite facing challenges, she leads an active and vibrant life. She participates in adaptive sports like kayaking, rowing, skiing and biking.
Shawna recently needed assistance with accessibility improvements, including a longer threshold ramp to access her front door independently and a portable ramp for her car, as lifting her wheelchair in and out of the vehicle had become increasingly difficult. Although she was managing other home modifications out of pocket, the grant provided the additional tools needed to improve her independence and mobility. These adjustments made a profound difference in her ability to navigate daily life with greater ease.
