Freedom Starts at Home: Chifei’s Journey Forward

Freedom means something different after a spinal cord injury.

As we celebrate the 4th of July and the freedoms we often take for granted, we're reminded that for many people living with paralysis, independence can be found in life's simplest momentsโ€”leaving home, getting to therapy, or spending time with family.

Just a few months ago, Chifei's life changed in an instant.

Early one morning while taking out the garbage, he suffered a devastating fall that resulted in a C4 spinal cord injury. Following emergency surgery, he began the difficult journey of intensive rehabilitation โ€” rebuilding his strength, his independence, and his spirit. Through it all, his wife never left his side, and his adult children worked to prepare their home for the day he could finally return. He pushed hard in rehab, and brought humor to even the toughest days.

After 8 weeks, Chifei was ready to come home - but one obstacle was in the way. Without a wheelchair ramp, he couldn't safely enter or leave his own house. This threatened more than his independence. It put his outpatient therapy at risk during the most critical window of his recovery - a period his doctors emphasized as crucial for maximizing long-term function.

That's when Triumph Foundation came to the rescue.

Through our Keep Moving Forward Grant Program, generous donors like you made it possible for Chifei to receive a wheelchair ramp for his home. Now he can safely come and go, attend weekly therapy appointments, and reconnect with family and friends in his community.

The ramp also lifted a tremendous burden from his wife, eliminating the physical demands of getting Chifei in and out of their home.

Chifei's family shared, "We are forever gratefulโ€ฆwe are so relieved and optimistic."

This Independence Day, we're celebrating the freedom to move forward. Because independence isn't something everyone can take for grantedโ€”but together, we can help make it possible.

Help us provide hope, resources, and opportunity to more individualsโ€”make a gift today.
