The Perfect Step Study

Andrew Skinner November 15, 2022 News, Noteworthy, SCI

What is this?

The Perfect Step “TPS” is collaborating with Kaiser Permanente to develop a multiyear study on the benefits of participation in activity-based therapy programs in the chronic (long-term) stage of recovery.

The purpose of the study is to collect the necessary data to take back to insurance companies that will validate the effectiveness and benefits of exercise post injury and diagnosis.

Additionally, the study is being used to determine the effect that Exercise, using the TPS methodology has on overall quality of life and reduction of secondary complications in a Spinal Cord injured person.

Hopefully with the outcomes from this study it will lead insurance companies to consider and begin reimbursing training sessions and other medical based needs.

The survey has four different parts. Each part asked the same questions with just a different prompt.

    • Part one: how did you feel seven days prior to leaving the hospital...
    • Part two: how did you feel six months after you left the hospital...
    • Part three: how did you feel one year after leaving the hospital...
    • Part four: how did you feel two years after leaving the hospital...Each survey should not take you more than 10 – 12 minutes to do. In total it will be about 40 minutes to complete all four, on the high end.

• Each participant can only complete one round of surveys for compensation
• Must complete all four rounds of the survey to be considered for compensation
• Must be a SPINAL CORD INJURY and have NOT participated for at least multiple years in physical therapy
• TPS will be taking up to 50 participants. First come first serve

For those that complete all four parts of the survey they will be awarded a $25 gift card and inserted into a drawing for a $500 prize.

The information gathered will be strictly confidential and your personal information, such as your name, will not be disclosed.

Why should I do it?

This can help the greater good in the paralysis and spinal cord injury community, to ultimately get insurance companies to consider some of the fundamental and basic needs post injury and diagnosis that we should be getting reimbursement for.

And you'll receive a $25 gift card for your help - PLUS you'll also be put into a drawing for a $500 prize towards your medical based needs.

Who will it benefit and who should fill out the surveys?

It will benefit those in the spinal cord injury and paralysis community.

This survey is only intended to be filled out for those that have not participated in therapy post injury or diagnosis of a spinal cord injury, specifically. Note: It is okay if you participated in outpatient therapy at a traditional rehab therapy center. However, we are looking for individuals that did not participate in therapy thereafter. Or, you have not participated in therapy for at least two year’s time.
