Grateful, Thankful and Blessed – Chris’s Comeback
November 23, 2021 News, SCI, Triumph Outreach Update, Videos
The year of comebacks might be coming to a close, but the comeback stories won't stop coming. We wanted 2021 to be a year of encouragement, where stories of triumph over trials dominated your inbox. This week is no exception. And it’s particularly potent as we head into the holidays.
We have so much to be grateful for. I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving, May God bless you, and the community that we serve.
"There is life after this! I can do anything I want."
For an active guy like Chris, with a steadfast wife and two young sons, coming back from his injury was not an option.
After a dune buggy trip in Nevada turned tragic, Chris lay in a hospital bed convinced his future was bleak. Due to pandemic restrictions, he was alone in the hospital for 2 months, unable to see his wife Deserie and their two young sons.
For those of us who have experienced the long hospital days following a spinal cord injury, we know that having family nearby is crucial for the emotional support needed to endure. Yet for many who were injured during 2020 and 2021, loneliness and despair are the only visitors they often receive.
So while Chris went through surgeries and therapy inside the hospital, Deserie turned to a trusted resource for answers... Google.
That's how she discovered Triumph Foundation and the crucial services we provide for newly-injured patients and their families.
"We would think that Chris was confined to a bed for the rest of his life, and that's not true. There's so much more!"
We were able to provide resources and referrals to a variety of services targeted to Chris's unique situation and set him up with peer mentors through our virtual support groups.
"I was at Northridge Hospital and they had the virtual support group," said Chris. "It helped a lot, seeing people who went through what I went through but have the experience so I could learn from their mistakes or learn from their experience."
We are committed to helping families like Chris and Deserie who need someone who has been there to help show the way back to recovery, back to mobility, and back to life. Check out the video below.
