Damarius’ New Wheels – Thanks to Josh

Andrew Skinner November 24, 2020 News, Noteworthy, SCI, Triumph Outreach Update

Damarius is a five-year-old boy who was in a life-altering car accident last year with his family in Utah. Sadly, he was the sole-survivor, but he suffered a spinal cord injury. Immediately after, his great Uncle Fred and Aunt Irma adopted him and took him into their home.

Their goal is to give him the best childhood possible.  When the family heard about Triumph Foundation's Adaptive Sports Festival they decided to go see what it was all about. It was there they found their first glimpse of hope. Damarius got to try out all the different types of wheelchairs, play a variety of wheelchair sports & activities, and meet other kids and families like him. They found a community they did not know existed, but in it, they felt like family.

Triumph Foundation kept in touch and invited Damarius to the annual Christmas party at Rancho Los Amigos. He showed up with a huge smile and in the Christmas spirit, everyone fell in love with him. Triumph gave him some child-sized yellow push gloves, a Triumph t-shirt, and a Care Basket full of information answering many of the questions that newly injured patients & families face. He was excited about the toys inside and his family cherished the resources.

Shortly after, Damarius’ family reached out to Triumph in need a small lightweight wheelchair to help give Damarius more independence. We immediately thought of Josh, a nine-year-old boy who was born with spina bifida that comes out to all Triumph’s sporting events.

Andrew had received a call just days earlier from Josh’s mom Tawney wanting to donate Josh’s nice Box wheelchair that he had outgrown.

It was the perfect fit for Damarius, so Andrew connected the two families; they are now friends and are looking forward to playing together at the next Triumph adaptive sport event.
