Claire’s Triumph Over Adversity – Keep Moving Forward Grant Recipient
agosto 15, 2024 News, Noteworthy, SCI, Triumph Outreach UpdateClaire’s Triumph Over Adversity
Claire was born with a lipomyelomeningocele, a condition associated with Spina Bifida, which went undiagnosed until the 5th grade. Daily lower back and leg pain led to a rapid loss of leg function, resulting in corrective surgery for Tethered Cord Syndrome and over 13 subsequent surgeries. The cemented scar tissue around her spinal cord causes immense pain with any leg movement or back strain.
Struggles with Mobility
Daily use of her wheelchair had worn down the tires, making it difficult for Claire to control her movements, especially on slopes and her van's ramp. Previously, the treaded tires provided the grip necessary for safe and independent mobility. Now, with bare tires, Claire faced the risk of sliding uncontrollably, compromising her safety and independence.
Triumph Foundation’s Support
Claire applied for a Triumph Foundation Grant to get new wheelchair tires so that she could regain her control and independence. New tires with proper tread have restored her ability to safely maneuver and stop, allowing Claire to continue living an independent and active life.
